Sinhalese tribal groups arrived in Sri Lanka in the 6th BC century, before that Sri Lanka was occupied by hunter-gatherers for thousands of years. The 3rd century BC saw the arrival of Buddhism consequently Anuradhapura became the capital of Buddhists. For several years’ Tamil kept inflicting pain until Buddhists abandoned Anuradhapura they kept on the vendetta, finally, Anuradhapura was ruled in the favor of Polonnaruwa in the south. In the north Hindus are dominant, back in the 12th century Tamils had a huge presence in the north.
The southern part of Sri Lanka became the trading gateway for Arab merchants, however, by the 16th century time changed, first Portuguese came, then later Dutch arrived. Sri Lanka’s geography is favorable for trading and richness in cinnamon lured Portuguese who possessed the island, later, in the early 17th century Dutch pushed them out of the island. Remains of earlier times can still be found today, artifacts, cannons, forts, and historical remains are spread all over the country, along the coast you will find more of these. After Dutch, the British arrived in Sri Lanka, by 1795 they took over the island. Britishers brought many changes by building churches, schools with western touch, colleges, and planted tea, coffee, sugar, and rubber.
In 1948 Sri Lanka earlier known as Ceylon gained independence from Britishers, though, they parted on a good note and maintain a cordial relationship. In 1972 Ceylon’s name was changed to Sri Lanka. Fight for independence and the changes in the political front majorly favored Sinhalese which led to a rift among the Tamil population.
In the period from 1983 to 2009, Sri Lanka went through civil war, from time to time, as a result, people were not able to settle down and people were exploited for their rights. In 2004 tsunami struck Sri Lanka, still they came back strong with a more stable economy. Sectors like tourism, agriculture, and telecommunication played a major role in developing the economy of Sri Lanka. Even after going through so much turbulence, colonization, civil war, and natural disaster inflicting pain and derailing the progress, Sri Lanka never let these obstacles impact their progress and emerged as a popular tourist destination and became an economic focal point.
